The Environment for the Human Factors Interaction Model includes such factors as illumination, noise levels, air quality, vibration, and climate.

With in the environment of the model there are two main systems. The automated or machine system and the human system. Each of these systems includes three components. The human system includes the Human sensory component, the human cognitive component, and the human Musculoskeletal component. The automated or machine system includes the machine input device component, the machine CPU component, and the machine display component.

The human sensory component receives information by vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. This information is acted on by the human cognitive component which includes attention, memory (short and long term), information processing, decision making, and action initiation. The human musculoskeletal component acts on the information from the human cognitive component in the form of motor co-ordination, action performance, and object manipulation.

The machine input device component receives data via sensors, controls, switches, levers, keyboards, mouse, trackball, touch screen, and by voice. This information is provided to the machine CPU component which processes the data, performs programmed procedures, stores data, retrieves data, and transmits responses. The machine display component provides visual, auditory, and tactile responses to the data processed by the machine CPU component. The machine display component also initiates queries with the human system.

These actions thus pass information back to the Human Sensory component of the Human system thus completing the circle of the Human Interaction model.
